Objective: To learn and experience a method for making large sculptures using metal re-enforced cement.

Goal: To make a functional ferro cement decorative structure; specifically a mushroom that can serve as a garden ornament and a stool.

Participants will:

  1. Safely handle, and shape expanded diamond mesh to create simple forms.
  2. Assemble shaped components to complete a complex form using tie wire.
  3. Learn how to proportion and mix fibreglass reinforced cement.
  4. Gain skill in applying glass fibre cement to the metal form.
  5. Experience colouring of cement.
  6. Applying finished and coloured surface to sculpture.
  7. Learn about curing and sealing cement structures.

 Safety Equipment and Tools

Each participant must provide their own:

  1. Eye protection
  2. Water resistant work gloves
  3. Old clothing, especially to protect the arms from sharp edges of diamond mesh
  4. Utility pliers (some will be provided)
  5. Metal cutters if you have them

 Supplied Materials and tools

  1. Cement trowel (limited number available for sale at $15.00 each)
  2. Cements
  3. Diamond mesh and ligature wire
  4. Metal cutters
  5. Pigments and modifiers
  6. Buckets


We will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Please come 15-30 minutes early for registration

and payment. Coffee will be provided. We plan for 1/2 hour lunch break. Please bring

a lunch as 1/2 hour will not allow enough time to go out. Option is to order food and

have it delivered.

3 Thursdays, 7pm – 10pm (March 8 – 22)

Using a live model participants will explore the human figure in clay to create a successful ceramic sculpture. The properties of clay as a sculptural medium, basic anatomy, armatures, and various techniques will be covered over the course of the workshop. The cost of one box of clay and the firing of your piece will be included in the cost of the course.

Description: Participants will complete 2 small projects–a garden ball and an Ikea mirror. If people have other small objects they wish to mosaic, this is certainly possible.

Materials: Will be provided. Bring a glass cutter and nippers if you have or can borrow these. Otherwise they will be provided. Safety glasses (I have some if you need a pair)

Participants: Minimum 6 and a maximum 10

DESCRIPTION: Learn the basics of cutting, carving, sanding and finishing at least one soapstone sculpture (more if you are a fast worker and/or do some homework).
WHEN: Saturday, April 14 and 21 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

WHAT TO BRING: Your lunch… All materials and tools will be supplied
COST: $50.00 for SAA members, $60.00 for non-members
REGISTRATION: Minimum 8 people, Maximum 10 people …..Deadline to register: April 7
PAYMENT: Cash or cheque (made out to Sculptors’ Association of Alberta)
