Biography

Ellie Shuster’s first love is portraiture – working from photographs she sculpts original portraits in clay, casting each piece in cold-cast bronze or colourful resin in her Edmonton studio. Some works become “fractured faces” as she uses her molds in unconventional ways.

As a ceramic artist Ellie is exploring the intersection between pottery and sculpture, which is leading her to discover the humour and delight in this newer artistic endeavour.

Ellie’s work can be found in private collections in the US, Europe and across Canada.
The portrait she created of Professor Stephen Hawking for his 75th birthday is displayed in the Science Museum of London England as part of the replication of his Cambridge office and Nelson Mandela is part of a collection in the Alchemist Gallery in Scotland. She is represented by galleries in Alberta and BC.

Largely self-taught, Ellie began sculpting in 2000. Her work is rooted in the belief that there is an important place for tactile sculpture among the graphic art on every collector’s walls – and that art mustn’t take itself too seriously!

Ellie is currently President of the Sculptors’ Association of Alberta.
